The list is virtually endless. If you are in need of unmetered service, cheap unmetered, with no sacrifice in quality then an unmetered server from Hivelocity is exactly what you’ve been searching for.  Question: What is unmetered hosting?  Let’s start by defining the terms.  Unmetered (def) : Unmetered bandwidth, the bandwidth is not measured during the month. However the bandwidth is limited by the network connection: 10Mbps (3200 GB) 20Mbps, 30Mbps, 50Mbps, or 100Mbps (32000 GB).  Hosting (def): Providing, running and maintaining a computer system.  Now when we talk about unmetered we are referring to bandwidth.  Let’s talk about bandwidth for a moment.


 Bandwidth is a measure of data transfer. Server data is fundamentally measured in bits, and bytes. Understanding the units of measure is necessary before you can do anything else. A Byte is simply 8 bits. In the world of computers measurements are conveniently represented by powers of two, while in the real world powers of ten are prevalent. This caused the confusing definition of "Kilobyte" to mean 1024 bytes instead of 1000 bytes as you might expect. Compounding the confusion, a Megabyte" is 1024 Kilobytes, or 1048576 bytes. A Gigabyte is 1024 Megabytes, or 1048576 Kilobytes, or 106954752 bytes. The number of bits or bytes per unit of time is referred to as bandwidth. Thus you see numbers such as 1.5Mbps (1,500,000 bits per second) 28.8Kb/s (28.8 Thousand bits per second) or 50GB/month (50 Gigabytes per month.)

The first lesson of understanding bandwidth is not to confuse Bits and Bytes. If you do, your numbers will be off by a factor of 8, which is usually pretty significant. Usually a lower-case 'b' indicates bit, and an upper case 'B' indicates byte, but you can't always rely upon that. The second lesson of understanding bandwidth is port speed.  Port speed is determinant upon two factors.  The speed set on the server itself via the NIC (network interface card) and on the switch that connects your server to the internet.  While some companies sell you a dedicated unmetered port it can be misleading.  For example say you get a server with a 100Mb dedicated unmetered port, your operating system is installed and you are all setup, you connect to the internet and you come to find out that your port speed at the switch is set to some number far below 100Mb or you come to realize that the switch you are on is in fact shared and the NIC port of the server is in fact the only thing that is set to 100Mb.  Most servers today have 1Gb/s NIC cards to allow for increased traffic flow. 1Gb/s (1Giga bit per second or 1024Mega bits per second or 330,000GB/ Month) ports can also be misleading at some companies.  When you are searching for a dedicated unmetered server ensure that the port speed as well as the servers NIC are what is being listed in the quote.


The last lesson to be learned with unmetered bandwidth is about shared vs dedicated.  The best option of course being dedicated.  He connection that you have to the internet allows your server to connect at a full Mb/s rate downloading and an equal Mb/s rate uploading.  Say for example you have a 100Mb/s unmetered service, your upload and download speeds can be 100Mb/s in both directions.  This is called full duplex.  If all hosts should have full duplex at this point, but it never hurts to ask.  Now with some other hosts you will find that they sell shared unmetered service.  In this case you would have something (for an example) a 100Mb/s uplink plugged into a 24 port switch.  Each new server that is plugged into that switch is given a 100Mb/s port and the port speed is not limited.  If that switch is full. Meaning that all 24 ports have servers connected o them, then each of those 24 servers are now sharing that one 100Mb/s uplink.  Every server has the ability to download at 100Mb/s but ideally every server would not go over 4.4Mb/s.  That typically not being the case, some users are downloading at 10Mb/s some at 30Mb/s and some never even reach the 1Mb mark.  Depending on your budget and your requirements, try to always go for the dedicated unmetered option.
